About Me

I'm a 30-something husband, father, business-owner, drummer, pilot, car-nut, and general advocate of living-well.  I like to eat food, read about food, write about food and talk about food.  I also love cheap light beer with my foie gras, or just about anything else.  I have an aversion to cloudy ice cubes that even my therapist cannot explain. Noca Bar Bites - Recession Dining at Noca?!

I recognize that Noca gets a disproportionate amount of time and space on this site, but it’s mainly because I’ve never had a bad meal there….and I’ve had many meals there! I also recognize that, in this economy, it’s not realistic for most people to “dine” very frequently. Even though I think the regular menu at Noca offers great bang-for-the-buck, they just started something new called “Bar Bites,” which is available on Thursday night only.  The menu will change weekly based on what's available and fresh.

“Recession dining at Noca” you say? Yep. These “tapas sized” portions of many Noca favorites, as well as a few new menu items, are a great way to try some excellent food at a very approachable price point. Most items range from $8 - $10 and you could easily make a meal out of two or three items. They’re only available at the Chef’s Counter, preferably by reservation since there is limited space.

Here is a sample of what I tried, with commentary.

Salmon Tartar ($8), shown with the Diver Scallop ($10)- There are many attempts at Salmon (or Tuna) Tartar, and I always though that Fine's Cellar (now closed) had the best in town.  But the Columbia River Salmon in this particular preparation raises this dish to a new level.  Highly recommended.  The Diver Scallop was also fantastic, served with corn succotash and corn shoots.

Cheesesteak Bite($10) - What can I say?  I am partial to a very greasy cheesesteak, preferably served with Cheese Whiz and fried onions.  So I have a hard time calling anything else a "cheesesteak."  Call this dish something other than that and you'll never argue over Pat's and Geno's again.  Kobe beef, white cheddar, caramelized onion jam.....sinfully good.

BBLT – Burrata, Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato ($9) - Burrata is all the rage, and if you haven't had it yet, then this is a great way to try it.  Creamy Burrata cheese, house-made bacon, and the best tomato you'll ever eat.
